The Jubilation Jazz “Big Band” will be performing a concert at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the worship center of Summit Baptist Church, 901 Ridgway Road.
The sound of the Big Band has been enjoyed by many listeners and performers for several decades.
“If you enjoy the Big Band music of Glen Miller, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw you’re going to really like this concert,” said Lewis Hinkle, Sumit’s music minister. “Jubilation Jazz takes the music of the church and plays it with the Big Band style.”
Ray Vardaman, former band director at White Hall High School and the University of Arkansas at Monticello, directs the band. Their program will include big band arrangements of such spirituals as “Amen” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” Favorite hymns such as “How Great Thou Art” and “When The Saints Go Marching In” will also be on the program.
“We’ve been all over the United States since the band was organized back in 1997, including overseas tours in Brazil, Trinidad, and Amman Jordan. It’s going to be good to be back in Pine Bluff to see friends and family,” Vardaman said.
The public is invited to attend. There is no cost for the concert but a free-will offering will be received to help with the expenses of the band.
