Lions Club donates $1,500 to food pantry

Beck recognized for service to Lions Club

WH rehab hosts car show, cookout

An antique automobile is displayed at the car show and cookout Oct. 10 at White Hall Health and Rehabilitation. The residents, their families and the White Hall community participated in the event. Guests from ages 2 to 102 enjoyed getting their faces painted, a spokesman said. The center thanked the Friendship Auto Club for providing several antique and classic cars. ‘It was truly an amazing day for the residents of White Hall Health and Rehab,’ the spokesman said. Crane, Blackett announce engagement

Mr. and Mrs. Larry and Paula Crane of White Hall announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Makeda Shardae Crane, to Theodore Carl Blackett, the son of Mrs. Theodora James and Mr. Callixtus Hilary Blackett, Sr., both of Brooklyn, New York.

Medal Presentation

Shown in the accompanying photo is Arkansas 2nd District Congressman Tim Griffin (at far right) presenting the Army Good Condct Medal to Peter Smykla. Smykla’s wife, son-in-law and grandchildren are seen to the left in the photo. “Fifty-six years ago a 24-year old soldier was discharged from the Army after serving with the Military Assistance Advisory Group on Taiwan. Specialist 3 Peter Smykla was awarded the Army Good Conduct Medal when he was discharged from the Army, but never received it. That oversight was rectified at the Hot Springs Arlington Hotel recently. Smykla, chairman of the Jefferson County Republican Committee, was attending the State Committee Meeting. Congressman Tim Griffin, a serving U.S. Army Reserve lieutenant colonel, JAG, presented the medal to Smykla after Party Chairman Doyle Webb read the award citation authorized by then Secretary of the Army Wilber Marion Brucker. “The United States Army has awarded the Good Conduct Medal to Specialist 3 Peter Joseph Smykla, Junior, for exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity in active federal military service from 11 January 1956 to 24 December 1957.” The presentation was a suprise arranged by county committee members after they learned Smykla never received his medal.

UAPB theater department to present Flyin' West

The John McLinn Ross Players, the premier theatrical performance group at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) will open their Onward and Upward season with a performance of Flyin’ West by Pearl Cleage. Directed by Cheryl Collins, director of Theater, the show will run Nov. 21 through Nov. 24 in the John M. Ross auditorium of the Hathaway-Howard Fine Arts Center.
