Local players helped UAPB to first win

The numbers aren’t overwhelming. Nine players on a roster of 92 are said to hail from Pine Bluff. Add in a pair of Monticello kids, and just shy of 12 percent of the Arkansas-Pine Bluff football roster went to high school in The Commercial’s coverage area.

Wildcats hoping to bounce back against Scrappers

The Watson Chapel Wildcats have opened this season up playing against some tough opponents. In two weeks they have played defending 5A-East Conference champion Batesville and defending 6A state champion Pine Bluff, and this week they’ll face off against another successful program. The Wildcasts will host the Nashville Scrappers reigning winners of the 7-4A Conference, at 7:30 pm. Friday, and the game has shaped up to be an interesting one.

A key fourth-quarter catch mentioned in a story appearing in Sunday’s issue of The Commercial about Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s win over Morehouse (Ga.) College on Saturday was made by former Pine Bluff High School player Paris Mack.

UAPB needs three overtimes to shake off Morehouse

The 8,117 in attendance at Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s home opener on Saturday could not be faulted if they spent the first three quarters of the game staring at their phones. It was that kind of game as the Golden Lions hosted Division II Morehouse (Ga.) College.
