Walkoff slam thwarts UAPB series sweep

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Grant Dougherty cracked a grand slam with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving Prairie View A&M a 5-1 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday and preventing a series sweep, which would have been the second this season for the Golden Lions (10-21, 10-4 SWAC).

Dougherty’s slam ended what was already a bad inning for UAPB pitchers Samuel Olson and Humberto Zavala (0-2). Olson, who also worked the eighth inning, was already responsible for two runs when he left the game for Zavala. Dougherty was the second batter Zavala faced.

UAPB starter Kyle Schwartz held Prairie View (12-15, 7-7) to an earned run on four hits and struck out four in seven innings. Panthers starter Chadd Flick gave up eight hits in five innings, but the Lions’ lone run came off Charles Philpott, who allowed five hits in 3 2/3 innings. Jordan Stewart (1-2) got the win after facing one batter in the ninth.

Tyler Oertle drove in UAPB’s game-tying run in the seventh. He had two hits, as did Mike Wieland, Jerimiah Figueroa, Jordan Hass and Kyle Schwartz.

Dougherty, who was 2 for 4, was Prairie View’s only multiple hitter.

UAPB, which entered the day with a 1½-game lead over Texas Southern for first place in the SWAC Western Division, is scheduled to host Lyon College at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
