UAPB softball loses season-opener to OBU

ARKADELPHIA — The Arkansas-Pine Bluff softball team allowed runs in all but one inning and failed to score in any of its frames in a 7-0 season-opening loss against Ouachita Baptist on Wednesday afternoon.

OBU started off on the right foot getting a leadoff home run by Jocelyn Jones to go up 1-0 in the bottom of the first.

Suzie Greshman scored on a passed ball in the second inning to put the Tigers (4-6) up 2-0.

OBU’s bigest inning was the third when it pushed three across the plate. An RBI single by Jessica Branam scored Jones, Teresa Mursuli hit an RBI single that scored Branam, and Gresham hit an RBI single that scored Kailey Madden.

The Lady Lions finally held the Tigers off the board in the fourth inning, but OBU built on its 5-0 lead the next inning.

A sac fly by Kate Lacina scored Jenna Hendry to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead. In the next inning, Hendry drew a bases-loaded walk to earn an RBI as Kayla Golden came into score.

Abbi Frakes earned the win in the circle. She threw six innings giving up no runs on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Shelby McWhorter retired all three batters she faced in the seventh to finish off the shutout.

Lacie Sutterfield (0-1) took the loss for UAPB. The senior gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts in five innings.

Delya Jackson and Kendra Linn mustered the Lady Lion’s only two hits on the afternoon.

UAPB begins play in the UCA Tournament against South Dakota State at 3:45 p.m. Friday in Conway. The next day UAPB plays Western Illinois and Central Arkansas before finishing the tourney Sunday against SDSU.
