GRAMBLING, La. — The Arkansas-Pine Bluff baseball team tallied two home runs and 13 hits as the Lions defeated Grambling State 8-5 Friday night in the first game of a three-game series.
Isias Alcantar hit a two-home run in the fourth and Joshua Cassidy hit a solo shot in the same inning as UAPB (5-11, 5-1 SWAC) scored three runs in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
The Lions also scored a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to secure the victory. Grambling (3-13, 0-4 SWAC) scored a run in the first, a run in the third and three in the sixth. The Tigers scored five runs on eight hits.
UAPB senior Kyle Schwartz is credited with the win after he pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Redmond Floyd picked up the save after pitching 1 2/3 innings and allowing just one hit with a strikeout.
Jerimiah Figueroa led the Lions at the plate, finishing the day with three hits in three trips with a run and two walks. Alcantar was 1 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Cassidy was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Kirby Campbell and Andre Davis had two hits a piece.
Edvara Matusevicius is tagged with the loss for Grambling. He pitched 5 2/3, allowing eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.
Kris Minter led Grambling with three hits, a run scored and an RBI. Yariel Medina and Korey Hall had two hits each. Hall also had a pair of RBIs.
The three-game series was originally scheduled to be played in Pine Bluff but was moved due to the expected rain this weekend. The series will conclude with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.
