NEW ORLEANS — A six-run first inning put on by Tulane was more than enough as the Green Wave swept Arkansas-Pine Bluff with an 11-4 win on Sunday at Turchin Stadium.
Sophomore left fielder Richard Carthon led a 12-hit Green Wave attack with three hits in four trips as Tulane improved to 4-0 to start the season.
Sunday’s win marked Tulane’s first sweep of a weekend opponent since taking all three games from Southern in Miss in May of 2012.
UAPB (0-4) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and scored two more in the sixth inning to get within two runs, but Tulane scored twice in the sixth and plated three more in the seventh.
Tulane sophomore Alex Massey was credited with the win after he came in to relieve starter Corey Merrill in the fifth inning. Massey pitched three innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Merrill worked four innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
Junior Dixon Marble is tagged with the loss for UAPB after he allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk in just five innings of work.
UAPB junior Joshua Cassidy led the team with three hits in five trips with two RBIs. Andre Davis was 2 for 4, and finished the four-game series with a batting average of .545.
Jerimiah Figueroa was 2 for 3 with a walk and a run scored.
For Tulane, Bowen Woodson was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored and Jake Rogers was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.
UAPB travels to Norman, Okla. today for a two-day series with Oklahoma. The Lions then travel to Auburn, Ala. for a three-day tournament beginning on Friday.
