Roach still reigns in SWAC shot put

NEW ORLEANS — Sireta Roach’s reign as indoor shot put champion in the SWAC has carried into the outdoor venue.

Roach added 10 more points to Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s total with a winning 46-foot, 4-inch toss Saturday in the shot put at the SWAC Championships at Tad Gormley Stadium. It’s the second victory for a UAPB athlete, male or female, in this meet.

Roach, a sophomore from Kingston, Jamaica, followed up a seventh-place finish in Friday’s hammer throw with Saturday’s win. She beat Southern’s Briana Radford by 1 foot, 7.75 inches.

So far, Roach has been the only scorer for UAPB in women’s competition. Her 12 points put the Lady Lions in seventh place, while Alabama State (39), Southern (37) and Prairie View A&M (35) lead a close team race.

Erick Thomas, who won Friday’s javelin throw for UAPB, picked up more points with a third-place finish in the men’s hammer throw (162-8) and fifth-place finish in the shot put (47-4.25). He has scored all of the Golden Lions’ 20 points in the meet, leaving the team in seventh place as well.

Mississippi Valley State leads the men’s standings with 56 points. Southern is second with 45 and Grambling State is third with 34.

The meet concludes today with championship including sprints and middle distances.
