Preps Roundup: Jackrabbits turn back Wildcats

LONOKE — Watson Chapel led 29-16 over Lonoke at halftime of the finals of the Goldfish Classic on Saturday. However, the Wildcats couldn’t hold onto the lead as the host Jackrabbits won the championship game 54-48.

The Wildcats led 19-12 after one quarter and 25-16 late in the first half when DeAndre Gates and Tevin Brown each hit baskets late to account for the first half score.

Lonoke’s Darian Young hit a three-pointer early in the second half. Brown then hit a jumper to make the score 31-19. From there, Lonoke scored 8 in a row to pull to within four at 31-27. The Wildcats led 36-35 after three quarters.

The fourth quarter was close with the score tied at 46-46 when Lonoke’s Jamel Rankin scored on a drive to the basket to make the score 48-46 with 1:42 left. Watson Chapel had a chance to take the lead when Datreon Lindsey was fouled while making a shot with 1:31 left but he missed the foul shot, leaving the score tied at 48-48.

Lonoke took a 50-48 lead on a jumper by Tykel Gray. Rankin and Darius McCall each hit two foul shots to account for the final score.

Brown led the Wildcats with 13 points. Leonard Robinson had 8. Xavier Young and Lindsey had 6 each.

McCall led Lonoke with 15 points. Blake Mack added 13. Rankin had 11. Gray had 10.

Magnolia 30, Warren 27

CAMDEN — Both teams combined for five points in the final quarter, and Magnolia’s three was just more than enough to eliminate Warren (0-2) from the Camden Fairview Holiday Classic.

The pace picked up when Warren outscored Magnolia 17-10 to take a 21-19 halftime lead, but both teams struggled to get much offense going in the final 16 minutes.

Darveon Brown scored 13 points and Ryan Clary had nine for the Lumberjacks. Kile Fletcher and Devonte Robinson led the Panthers with nine each.

Warren will host Star City on Jan. 7.


Pine Bluff 56, LR Parkview 54

WYNNE — Pine Bluff surged from a 30-21 halftime deficit and scored on a Kye Richardson runner on the baseline with about 3 seconds left to knock off Little Rock Parkview in the semifinals of the Mid-South Classic.

For Pine Bluff (10-1), Jasmyn Eckermann had 19 points, Ajia Richardson scored 18 and Kye Richardson finished with 10. Crystal Holloway led Parkview with 25 points.

Pine Bluff will take on Little Rock Central or Jacksonville at 7 p.m. Monday for the Classic championship.

Star City 43, Heber Springs 36

HEBER SPRINGS — Star City (12-2) held Heber Springs to two fourth-quarter points and came away with the Heber Springs Christmas Classic championship.

Heber Springs held a 24-21 halftime advantage before Star City outscored the Lady Panthers 14-10. The Lady Bulldogs held the ball for most of the fourth quarter.

Jaida Harden scored 17 points and Tekeila Walker added 12 for Star City, which will begin 8-4A Conference play at Warren on Jan. 7.

El Dorado 49, Watson Chapel 37

CAMDEN — El Dorado had three players reach double digits in defeating Watson Chapel 49-37 in the Camden Fairview Holiday Classic on Saturday night.

Krystalyne Miles led Watson Chapel (4-7) with nine points and Morgan Monk chipped in with eight.

Watson Chapel will play Camden Fairview in the consolation game on Monday at 4 p.m.
