Jon Daniel Danielczyk struck out a career-high six batters and Pittsburgh scored a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning as the Panthers defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 4-2 in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader at Taylor Field.
Danielczyk pitched five innings of relief for the win, allowing just one run (unearned) on one hit.
After the first two batters to third and first, UAPB (18-25) had the tying run come to the plate in the bottom of the seventh but managed to plate just the one run.
UAPB managed seven hits in the contest but left eight runners on base.
Boo Vazquez hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to give Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead. He finished 1 for 3 with a run and two RBIs.
Kyle Schartz pitched 6 1/3 innings in the loss for UAPB. He allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits with two walks and one strikeout.
UAPB also scored a run in the bottom of the third.
Isias Alcantar finished 3 for 4 to lead the Lions’ offense. Vladimir Gomez finished 1 for 3 with a run scored. Mike Wieland, Andre Davis and Tyler Oertle had a hit each.
For Pittsburgh, Dylan Wolsonovich finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
The series is scheduled to conclude today at noon at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
