Lions replace tourney with two games

The HBCU Tip-Off Championship will not go on as originally planned this year, but Arkansas-Pine Bluff managed to add a pair of games to its schedule to start the men’s basketball season with.

UAPB will still head to Atlanta, where the tournament was to be held, and take on two Division II programs Nov. 10 and 11 at Morehouse College. The Golden Lions will play Tuskegee (Ala.) at 3 p.m. Nov. 10 and Morehouse at 7 p.m. Nov. 11.

A conference call was held Thursday among Tip-Off Championship organizers and teams to discuss whether to go on with the tournament or reschedule with some other games. The tournament was postponed until 2014 due to “unforeseen circumstances,” tournament creator Kevin Clayton told the Atlanta Daily World.

Citing an organizer, Lions coach George Ivory said a sponsor pulled out of the tournament at the last minute.

“We thought it’d be late trying to scramble and get some games with other teams,” Ivory said Thursday, “but we were able to schedule these two games at Morehouse. It could be something special.”

UAPB was scheduled to play Wisconsin-Green Bay, Norfolk State and Tuskegee in the tournament.

The Lions’ first Division I opponent is Oklahoma State, in a game scheduled for Nov. 15 in Stillwater, Okla.
