Lions clinch another series

Isias Alcantar tallied four hits and three RBIs and Arkansas-Pine Bluff defeated Southern 16-7 Sunday afternoon to win the three-game conference series two games to one at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.

Alcantar finished the game with four hits — including a home run — in six trips with three RBIs and three runs scored. Alcantar had six hits over the weekend and eight total RBIs.

UAPB (12-22, 12-5 SWAC) never trailed in the game. The Golden Lions scored a run in the first, two in the third, eight in the fourth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh and eighth innings. UAPB tallied 17 hits and left 10 runners on base.

Andre Davis broke out of his slump, finishing the day 3 for 6 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Tyler Oertle, Jose Hernandez, Jordan Haas, and Rashawn Tillman had two hits each for the Lions.

Vladimir Gomez — who had five hits in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader — finished Sunday 0 for 2 with three walks, an RBI and three runs scored.

Kyle Schwartz picked up his third victory of the year. He pitched six innings, allowing seven runs (all earned) on 13 hits with four walks and one strikeout. Samuel Olson pitched three shutout innings of relief, allowing just two hits with two walks.

Southern (6-18, 2-11) scored a run in the second, fourth and fifth inning before tallying four runs in the top of the seventh. D.J. Wallace hit his second home run in two games and finished the day 4 for 5 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Jose DeLaTorre and Brian Rowry had three hits each for the Jaguars.

J’Markus George gave up 10 runs (seven earned) on nine hits in just 3 1/3 innings. Victor Ilarraza pitched 4 2/3 and gave up six runs (three earned) on eight hits with three walks and one strikeout.

UAPB is scheduled to host Jarvis Christian College in a doubleheader today beginning at 1 p.m. at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
