Lions blanked in opener

NEW ORLEANS — The Arkansas-Pine Bluff baseball season did not start the way the team would have hoped as they lost 7-0 to Tulane in the first game of a four-game series Friday at Turchin Stadium.

Tulane freshman J.P. France allowed just three hits in seven innings and struck out nine in his debut with the Green Wave.

Tulane (1-0) gave him all the offense he would need as the Green Wave scored two runs in the first, third and fourth innings. They also scored a run in the second inning.

Richard Carthon led Tulane with two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Stephen Alemais and Andrew Garner were 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

Garrett Deschamp was 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Tulane tallied nine hits in the contest.

UAPB senior Kyle Schwartz was tagged with the loss after he went just 4 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs (all earned) on eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Senior Kirby Cambell led the Lions with two hits in four trips. Mitch Bruckshaw, Mike Wieland and Jerimiah Figueroa tallied the other three hits for UAPB (0-1).

The Lions left six runners on base and committed just one error.

The series continues today with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
