Hole Too Deep to Climb: Golden Lions rocked after quick start

CONWAY — Arkansas-Pine Bluff scored the first three and the last eight runs of Tuesday’s game against Central Arkansas, but it was no where near enough as the Bears pounded out 15 hits in a 18-12 win over the Golden Lions in the first of a two-game series.

UCA (10-8) scored five runs in the second, two in the fourth, five in the fifth and three in the sixth as they had an 18-4 lead by the seventh inning. UAPB (7-12) also got a run in the fifth.

Relief pitcher Josh Markel was credited with the win for UCA. He pitched three innings, allowing no hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Starter Riley Echols went four innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

UAPB junior Samuel Olson was tagged with the loss. He lasted just two innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on three hits with four walks and one strikeout. The Lions used five different pitchers in Tuesday’s contest.

Tyler Oertle led UAPB at the plate, finishing the night with two hits in three appearances with a run scored an an RBI. Jason Ibrahim and Andre Davis had two RBIs each to lead the Lions.

Doug Votolato finished the night 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBIs for UCA. Chris Townsend was 1 for 3 with a run scored and three RBIs.

Brandon Montalvo was 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs.

UAPB will host UCA tonight at 6 at Taylor Field to wrap the two-game series.
