When Arkansas-Pine Bluff will begin its men’s basketball season is up in the air after the announced postponement of the HBCU Tip-Off Championship tournament in Atlanta’s Philips Arena.
On Tuesday, tournament creator Kevin Clayton announced the Nov. 8-11 event was postponed until 2014 due to “unforeseen circumstances,” according to the Atlanta Daily World. But UAPB coach George Ivory said Wednesday tournament organizers and teams are still trying to work out a deal to have the event played. He added a conference call among the parties would be held Thursday to further discuss the matter.
According to Ivory, citing an organizer, a sponsor pulled out of the tournament at the last minute, resulting in the postponement.
UAPB was scheduled to play Wisconsin-Green Bay on Nov. 8, Norfolk State on Nov. 9 and Tuskegee (Ala.) on Nov. 11. Texas Southern, Atlanta-based Morehouse, Johnson C. Smith (N.C.) and Virginia Union were expected to participate in the tournament as well.
All except Green Bay are historically black colleges and universities, hence the name of the tournament.
The next scheduled game for UAPB is Nov. 15 at Oklahoma State.
