Green Wave now 3-0 against Golden Lions


NEW ORLEANS — The Arkansas-Pine Bluff baseball team was swept by Tulane 3-1 and 3-2 in Saturday’s doubleheader at Turchin Stadium, pushing the Golden Lions’ losing streak to start the season to three games.

In Game 2, UAPB (0-3) had a 2-0 lead by the second inning, but the Green Wave scored a run in the second and two in the third to come back and win the seven-inning contest. It guaranteed a series win for Tulane (3-0).

Tulane senior Tyler Mapes picks up the win after allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits in four innings of work. He also struck out two and walked one.

Emerson Gibbs pitched the remaining three innings and did not allow a hit or a run.

UAPB got on the board in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by senior Isias Alcantar. It scored junior Andre Davis, who reached on a single.

Davis finished the game with three hits in four trips.

In the top of the third, junior Mitch Bruckshaw hit an RBI double with two outs to plate junior Joshua Cassidy, who led off the inning with a single.

UAPB senior Redmond Floyd was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs (all earned) on two hits in just two innings of work. He also walked four.

UAPB used five pitchers in the game. The Lions tallied nine hits and left seven runners on base.

Bruckshaw and Alcantar finished the game 1 for 3 with an RBI.

The Lions found themselves in a pitcher’s duel in the first game of the doubleheader, but Tulane’s Randy LeBlanc got the edge as he pitched six scoreless innings.

LeBlanc, a junior, allowed just three hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Kyle McKenzie earned the save by allowing just one run (unearned) on one hit in three innings.

He also struck out three and walked two.

For UAPB, senior Mikey Ramirez went six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Jim Ploeger closed out the game, allowing one run (earned) on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts.

Tulane scored a run in the third, sixth and seventh inning. UAPB’s only run came in the top of the eighth.

Mike Wieland reached on an error to begin the inning and after stealing second and advancing to third on an error by the catcher, Wieland scored on an infield groundout by junior Andre Davis.

Alcantar led UAPB at the plate, finishing 2 for 4 and Davis was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

UAPB tallied four hits, committed three errors and left six runners on base.

The Lions will wrap up the four-game series today with a 1 p.m. start.
