CLEVELAND, Miss. — The 23rd-ranked Arkansas-Monticello baseball team saw its seven-game winning winning streak come to an end on the road Wednesday afternoon.
The Boll Weevils, which defeated Union (Tenn.) before sweeping back-to-back Great American Conference series against Harding and East Central (Okla.), fell to 13th-ranked Delta State, 7-3, at Boo Ferris Field.
The Statesmen (22-6) took a 7-1 lead after six full innings with one run in each of the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, and three more in the sixth.
UAM (24-11) took advantage of a pair of DSU errors to push across two runs in the top of the seventh. Senior Tyler Caruthers, who led UAM going 3 for 3 with a pair of runs batted in, picked up his third hit of the game and second RBI as a part of the two-run rally.
Down 2-0 to start the fourth inning, UAM cut the deficit in half on an RBI single from Caruthers to score senior D’Marco Poindexter, who doubled off the wall in left-center earlier in the frame.
Poindexter finished the game 1 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored. Senior catcher Chad Miller picked up a pair of hits in four at-bats and also scored a run.
Junior Turner Neely (2-1) took the loss after giving up four runs (three earned) off eight hits in the first 4 2/3 innings. Casey Greene (1-1) earned the win for DSU after giving up just one run off six hits in the first four innings.
The Weevils are back in action this Friday and Saturday on the road against Southeastern Oklahoma State. The three-game series opens with a single game at 2 p.m. Friday and concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon in Durant, Okla.
