Arkansas-Monticello’s baseball team has taken a big leap in two Division II polls.
College Baseball Lineup and D2BaseballNews.com both have ranked UAM No. 13 in their latest polls, released Monday. The ranking by the latter poll is a four-spot jump from last week, while the Boll Weevils (12-3, 4-2 Great American Conference) moved up three spots in the CBL poll.
A big factor in UAM’s latest rise was its 2-0 upset win at Arkansas State last Tuesday. UAM followed that with a doubleheader victory over Memphis Division II program LeMoyne-Owen College and a home series win over Southwestern Oklahoma State.
SWOSU (4-7, 2-4), however, ended UAM’s seven-game winning streak Sunday afternoon with a 5-4, 12-inning victory in Monticello. The deciding run was scored when reliever Jeff Harvill (1-1) overthrew first base on a groundout to allow Chris Faulkner to score from second base. Harvill allowed two runs off four hits in 2 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
The Weevils forced extra innings on a one-run single by Ben Agredano in the bottom of the ninth inning. That tied the game at 3-3.
The Bulldogs took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 11th, but the Weevils answered with a fielder’s choice groundout from Travis Steinke to score Evan Comeau. Comeau led off the frame by beating out a bunt single and was pushed to third on an Agredano single.
Brandon Ruiz homered for SWOSU in the third inning to open the scoring. For UAM, D’Marco Poindexter hit an RBI single in the fifth and Austin Braddock smacked a solo shot in the sixth.
UAM will face former Gulf South Conference rival Delta State at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Weevils Field.
