Arkansas-Monticello has slid one spot to No. 16 in the latest College Baseball Lineup Top 30 after winning two of three games at Northwestern Oklahoma State, but that remains the Boll Weevils’ highest national ranking as they head into Tuesday’s game at Arkansas State.
The series victory, which opened Division II Great American Conference play, also has resulted in a four-spot leap up to No. 17 in the D2BaseballNews.com Top 30. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 40, which made its in-season debut, has UAM (7-2, 2-1 GAC) at No. 24.
The rankings come a day after UAM sealed its series victory at NWOSU with an 8-5 win in Alva, Okla. UAM took a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning on Corey Wood’s three-run home run after Travis Steinke and Austin Braddock each hit an RBI single. Braddock batted 3 for 5 and Wood was 2 for 3 with two walks to lead UAM offensively.
Woodlawn graduate Gavin Johnston (1-0) allowed one run off six hits with three strikeouts and no walks in the middle three innings. Starter Braddock didn’t allow a hit in 3 2/3 innings, but four walks and five hit batsmen led to the Rangers’ first four runs.
Jeff Harvill took his second save of the year, striking out two in the ninth.
First pitch for UAM and Arkansas State is set for 4 p.m. Tuesday in Jonesboro.
