INDIANAPOLIS — Arkansas-Monticello would qualify for the NCAA Division II Central Regional baseball playoffs if they began today.
Coming off its first series win over archrival Southern Arkansas since 2001, the Boll Weevils (33-13, 22-8 Great American Conference) have moved up to No. 3 in the latest regional poll. The top six teams of each region following the conclusion of all conference tournaments will qualify for the regional tournament, which is usually hosted by the top-ranked team in that region.
UAM finished second in GAC standings and will take on Southwestern Oklahoma State at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the first round of the GAC tournament in Enid, Okla. A win for UAM will tie a school record for victories in a season.
Arkansas Tech (41-8), the GAC regular-season champion, is ranked No. 1 in the region, followed by Minnesota State-Mankato (36-7), UAM, Southern Arkansas (34-16), Emporia State (31-10) of Kansas, St. Cloud State (31-10) of Minnesota, Central Missouri (35-14) and Augustana (33-14) of South Dakota. UAM is 6-5 against currently ranked Central Region teams, including 2-2 marks against Arkansas Tech and Southern Arkansas, 1-1 against Mankato a win over Central Missouri.
The Weevils also moved up eight spots to No. 17 in this week’s Perfect Game Top 25, formerly known as College Baseball Lineup. They also are ranked 29th by D2BaseballNews.com and have received votes in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association polls.
This is the 12th week in a row one of those four outlets has ranked UAM nationally.
