MONTICELLO — Arkansas-Monticello wrapped up its first Great American Conference baseball sweep of the season Saturday, beating Harding 6-4 in a matchup of top-30 teams in Division II.
Austin Braddock (1-0) went perfect through five innings as the 28th-ranked Boll Weevils (21-10, 11-7 GAC) built a 6-0 lead with two runs in the second inning and four in the fourth. Harding scored four in the sixth, but Jeff Harvill worked the final two innings to pick up his sixth save of the season.
UAM scored its first two runs by way of a hit-by-pitch with bases loaded and a sacrifice that led to a double play. D’Marco Poindexter and Ben Agredano hit RBI doubles as part of the four-run fourth in which the Boll Weevils had five hits.
Harding (16-12, 8-7) held UAM to three hits in the final four innings after giving up 10. Zach McKnight and Kregg Snook worked the mound before Harvill took over.
Braddock gave up four runs on five hits and struck out three without allowing a walk in the win. Tyler Caruthers and Agredano each had three hits and Evan Comeau added two for UAM.
Logan Holthaus (3-1) gave up six runs on 11 hits in the first 4 1/3 innings to suffer the loss.
With the series win, UAM is now fourth in the GAC, behind No. 4 Southern Arkansas (24-7, 12-6), No. 13 Arkansas Tech (20-8, 10-5) and unranked Southwestern Oklahoma State (16-10, 10-5). Harding is sixth in the 11-team league.
UAM’s scheduled doubleheader at Lyon College for Tuesday has been cancelled. The Weevils will play again next Friday and Saturday at home against East Central (Okla.) in another GAC series.
