Weevils blow out GAC-leading Bulldogs

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — The Arkansas-Monticello men knocked off the top team in their conference with a huge road win on Saturday.

Senior Brandon Wilson finished with a double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead UAM past Great American Conference-leading Southwestern Oklahoma State 68-52 at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.

The 16-point win is the Boll Weevils’ largest victory of the season against a GAC opponent.

UAM (15-6, 8-5 GAC) separated themselves from SWOSU (12-6, 9-3) midway through the first half, using a 7-0 run to grab an 11-point lead. The Weevils maintained its double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the contest.

UAM finished the game shooting 47 percent from the field (26-for-55), 36 percent on three-pointers (4-for-11) and 60 percent on foul shots (12-for-20). SWOSU was limited to 30 percent from the field (17-for-56) and 10 percent on three-pointers (1-for-10).

Wilson was the only Weevil to reach double-figures, but his 10-for-13 performance from the field proved decisive.

Rod Camphor led the Bulldogs with 15 points.

UAM back in action Thursday at Southeastern Oklahoma State. The women’s game is set to tip off at 5:30 p.m. in Durant with the men’s game to follow.

SWOSU 72, UAM 46

WEATHERFORD, Okla. — The Arkansas-Monticello women’s basketball team was blown out by Southwestern Oklahoma State 72-46 in a Great American Conference road game on Saturday afternoon.

The Cotton Blossoms (5-14, 1-12 GAC) led for the first six minutes before the Lady Bulldogs (12-6, 9-3 GAC) used an 11-2 run to grab a four-point lead with 12:17 remaining in the opening half. UAM scored the next five points to regain the lead on a three-pointer from sophomore Jordan Goforth at the 10:28 mark.

SWOSU regained the lead on its next possession and maintained that lead for the remainder of the contest. The Lady Bulldogs grew their lead to double-digits with 2:17 remaining in the half and led 32-23 at the break.

The Blossoms trimmed the deficit to seven points at the 14:08 mark before SWOSU scored 13 consecutive points over the next five minutes to build a 21-point lead at the 9:40 mark.

Jordan Goforth led the Blossoms with 16 points and also added a game-high eight rebounds. SWOSU’s Taryn Samaya led all scorers with 26 points in 32 minutes off the bench.
