RUSSELLVILLE — Arkansas-Monticello sophomore Zach McKnight, who struck out a career-high nine batters in Friday’s 13-1 win against Southern Nazarene, was named the Great American Conference Baseball Co-Pitcher of the Week.
McKnight, of Bentonville, made the best of his rare Friday starting role and sat down almost two-thirds of the 25 batters he faced, giving up no earned runs and one earned. He also held the Crimson Storm to three hits with no walks in a complete-game victory. The game was the first in which McKnight went the distance in his collegiate career.
Mainly a midweek starter and weekend reliever, McKnight is 4-2 with a 2.58 earned-run average and one save in more than 52 innings.
Eddie Cumpston of Northwestern Oklahoma State, who struck out 10 in a seven-inning no-hitter against Hillsdale Baptist (Okla.), shared the award with McKnight.
UAM baseball and softball games scheduled for Tuesday have been altered. The home baseball game against Delta State (Miss.) has been cancelled with no makeup planned, and the softball doubleheader at Delta State has been moved to 11 a.m. Wednesday in Cleveland, Miss.
The baseball Boll Weevils will still visit Harding for a 3 p.m. Wednesday game in Searcy.
