UAM breaks into national polls


MONTICELLO — Three wins over nationally-ranked teams and a 5-1 start to the season have vaulted Arkansas-Monticello into its highest national rankings ever as a Division II baseball program.

CollegeBaseballLineup.com has UAM ranked No. 15 and D2BaseballNews.com ranked the Boll Weevils No. 21.

UAM beat No. 15 St. Mary’s (Texas) 16-5 and No. 19 Central Missouri 4-2 during the Houston Astros Winter Invitational, en route to a 4-0 stay in that tournament. UAM followed a 4-3 loss to No. 1 Minnesota State-Mankato with an 8-5 win in Sunday’s doubleheader.

Mankato (1-1) fell to No. 2 in both polls behind Tampa (6-0). Southern Arkansas is ranked No. 4 byD2BaseballNews.com and No. 11 by CollegeBaseballLineup.com.

UAM senior centerfielder D’Marco Poindexter was named Great American Conference Player of the Week on Monday. Poindexter, of Springhill, La., tallied two game-winning hits and batted in eight runs in the past seven days.

Poindexter smashed a two-run double that game the Boll Weevils a 3-0 lead in the win over Central Missouri and the next day smacked a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to beat Henderson State 6-3.

Poindexter is 7 for 18 on the season with a .611 slugging average.
