JONESBORO — The Arkansas-Monticello men’s basketball team concluded the exhibition portion of the 2013-14 schedule with a 95-64 loss to Arkansas State on Tuesday inside the ASU Convocation Center.
The Boll Weevils were limited to just eight made field goals in the first half, while the Red Wolves made 17 shots to take a 44-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the final 20 minutes, the Weevils made 13-of-28 field goals and 10-of-11 free throw shots for 38 second-half points, but the Red Wolves made 64 percent of its shots in the final period for 51 points.
For the entire game, UAM shot 40 percent from the field (21-of-53), 25 percent on three-pointers (2-of-8) and 80 percent on free throws (20-of-25). ASU finished at 55 percent from the field (33-of-60), 31 percent on three-pointers (10-of-32) and 68 percent on foul shots (19-of-28).
Junior D’Audrio Patton led the Weevils with 13 points and four rebounds. Senior Brandon Sims also reached double-digits with 12 points and six rebounds. Junior Tre Wells added nine points in his 12 minutes off the bench.
Six of the nine participating Red Wolves reached double-digits in scoring, led by Melvin Johnson with a game-high 22 points.
The Weevils are set to open the regular season this weekend at the Delta Challenge in Cleveland, Miss. hosted by Delta State. UAM faces Eckerd (Fla.) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the season opener, and follows up on Sunday with Florida Southern at 2 p.m.
