Anterless only hunt open October 12th

LITTLE ROCK – The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has implemented a private land antlerless-only modern gun hunt for the third consecutive year. The hunt is scheduled for Oct. 12-16 in deer zones 1, 1A, 2, 3, 6, 6A, 8, 8A, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 16A, and 17.

According to AGFC Deer Program Coordinator Gory Gray, “The early harvest of doe deer makes good biological and management sense. Removing the right number of female deer is an integral part of quality deer management, and if we can remove those animals prior to the rut (when bucks will expend a large amount of energy to chase doe), that will help us better balance our buck to doe harvest ratios and improve the productivity of the remaining deer herd.”

The hunt is restricted to privately owned or controlled property, which includes property leased from timber companies and other private entities. All wildlife management areas, national wildlife refuges, and national forests are off-limits to this specific hunt.

During this hunt:

· Hunters may use modern firearms and muzzleloaders to harvest antlerless deer (does and bucks with both antlers shorter than 2 inches) in the private land deer zones listed above;

· All deer harvested during the private lands antlerless-only hunt will count towards the hunter’s seasonal bag limit;

· Statewide and deer zone bag limits apply;

· All hunters, including bowhunters, where an open private land antlerless-only modern gun hunt is open are required to wear hunter orange during the hunt;

· Archery tackle may still be used to harvest bucks or does;

· No dogs are allowed, and

· Button bucks are legal to harvest but must be checked as a buck, not a doe. Hunters are strongly urged to closely examine their target before pulling the trigger.

Specific private land deer zone bag limits are available in the 2013-14 Arkansas Hunting Guidebook or at agfc.com. Additional information is available at 800-364-4263.
