JONESBORO — Former Pine Buff football player Austin McGehee announced Tuesday that he will be joining Arkansas State this fall, after signing with Purdue in February.
“Happy to announce that I will be joining the Arkansas State Red Wolves this fall #G3,” McGehee said on his Twitter.
The Commercial’s Southeast Arkansas first-team kicker finished his senior year 7 for 11 on field goals, 42 of 44 on extra points and had a 40.7 average on 23 punts.
His shining moment came on a 43-yard field goal as time expired in Pine Bluff’s 37-34 win over Greenwood in the 6A state semifinals last fall.
McGehee had verbally committed to the Big Ten Conference school last June after visiting Purdue’s campus.
“The respect I have for coach (Darrell) Hazell and his staff will last forever,” McGehee said on his Twitter page. “Purdue holds it’s place in my heart, however I have to move forward.”
Arkansas State finished last season with an 8-5 overall record and a 5-2 record in the Sun Belt Conference. The Red Wolves defeated Ball State 23-20 in the GoDaddy Bowl in Mobile, Alabama for their second straight bowl win.
Multiple calls to McGehee were not returned.
