Eight athletes from the Port City SPEED Track and Field Club qualified for the AAU Junior Olympics July 28-August 2 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Tyonna Hayes and Andreanna Dean joined Madison Taggart and Praise Malone to capture both the Arkansas State Championship and Area 17 Regional Championship titles for the 12-year-old girls 4x100m relay. They enter the national competition ranked seventh in the nation after clocking a time of 54.08 seconds at the regional competition held in Joplin, Missouri, earlier this month. Dean also qualified in the 100m dash and 200m dash events and Hayes enters the competition undefeated in the 100m and 400m dash for 12-year-old girls. Also qualifying to compete in Des Moines is 9-year-old Savanna Hill who will compete in the turbo javelin and shot put.
