The Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lady Lions (7-17, 1-2) recorded their first conference win of the season Tuesday night as they defeated the Prarie View A&M Lady Panthers 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22).
Both team came out the gates trading scores. Prairie View had a short run of service kills while the UAPB took advantage of the Lady Panthers’ attack errors.
Freshman outside hitter Whitney Harris scored to give the Lady Lions a little breathing room at 10-7 but the Lady Panthers capitilzed on the Lady Lions’ mistakes even the set at 10-10.
Junior middle blocker Ashlie Jones and sophomore right side Ayanna Parker provided a pair of key kills during the rally to extend lead to 23-20. Soon there after Jordan Foyer, who was last week’s Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Setter of the Week, scored the game point to end the first set.
Within the second set the Lady Lions found themselves down at one point 9-4. After UAPB head coach Kyetta May called a timeout to make some adjustments, UAPB pulled off an impressive run to go on top of Prairie View 16-12.
UAPB edged Prairie View 25-23 by forcing the Lady Panthers to commit attacking errors and freshman middle blocker Audrey Sherles scoring on the last two kills for UAPB.
The Lady Panthers finally found a rhythm in the third set and outlasted the Lady Lions as they capitilized on ball handling errors and attacking errors.
However, the Lady Lions were able to bounce back and win the fourth set. Although the last set was played close again with seven lead changes, UAPB built momentum off a kill from sophomore right side Eleni James-Becton to put them ahead 19-17.
Foyer’s serves were met by attack errors from the Lady Panthers and Jones pulled out the game point to end the set 25-22.
Jones had 12 kills while Rachel Hornbuck and Audrey Sherles had eight kills each. UAPB had nine team blocks.
Ayanna Parker had 14 digs and Courtney Brand had 15 digs.
