Bryant drops Chapel girls in tourney

CABOT — The Bryant Lady Hornets defeated Watson Chapel 54-41 in the Cabot Pre-Holiday Tournament on Wednesday night.

Kierra Cox and Peyton Martin led Watson Chapel with 15 points each.

Watson Chapel (2-4) will face Jacksonville on Saturday at 1 p.m.

ASU lands league-best 12 on All-SBC teams

JONESBORO — The Arkansas State football team landed 12 players on All-Sun Belt Conference teams as announced by the conference on Wednesday.

Highlighting the Red Wolves’ selections are four first-team players at five positions.

Sophomore and Dumas-native Darion Griswold earned second-team honors at tight end.

According to an ASU news release, A-State had 10-plus players named all-conference for the fourth straight season and seventh time overall since the league’s inaugural football season in 2001. Made up of six sophomores, two juniors and four seniors, ASU’s 12 players earning the recognition were its second most ever as a member of the Sun Belt.

Sophomore wide receiver J.D. McKissic (Phenix City, Ala.), junior linebacker Qushaun Lee (Prattville, Ala.), senior defensive lineman Ryan Carrethers (Nashville, Tenn.) and senior kicker Brian Davis (Brentwood, Tenn.) earned first-team honors. In addition to earning first-team accolades at wide receiver, McKissic was an all-purpose choice on the top team and a second-team pick as a return specialist.

The Red Wolves’ second-team selections included sophomore running back Michael Gordon (Camden, Miss.), Griswold, senior offensive lineman Steven Haunga (Richmond, Calif.), sophomore offensive lineman Bryce Giddens (Moultrie, Ga.) sophomore cornerback Rocky Hayes (Heflin, Ala.) and junior safety Sterling Young (Hoover, Ala.).

Senior quarterback Adam Kennedy (Elk Grove, Calif.) and sophomore defensive end Chris Stone (Daleville, Ala.) made the squad as honorable mention picks.

NATIONAL

Broncos’ Welker ruled out for Thursday vs. Chargers

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker and defensive lineman Derek Wolfe have both been ruled out for Thursday’s game against the San Diego Chargers.

Welker suffered a concussion during Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans. The Texas Tech product has caught 73 passes for 778 yards and 10 touchdowns in 13 games this season.

Cornerback Champ Bailey is listed as questionable with a foot injury that has limited him to three games this season.

Cassel to start for Vikings against Eagles

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Minnesota Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said that Matt Cassel will start at quarterback Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Cassel will be under center for the second straight week after getting the start in last Sunday’s thriller against the Baltimore Ravens. He completed 17- of-38 passes for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Fellow quarterback Christian Ponder missed the contest with a concussion.

Frazier announced on Wednesday that he was sticking with Cassel for another week.
