A Watson Chapel Junior High football player was transported to Jefferson Regional Medical Center on Thursday after collapsing on the field during a home benefit game against Monticello.
Watson Chapel athletic director John Hayden said the athlete, identified as ninth-grader Josh Pierce, was responsive and breathing when he was taken to the ambulance. He received medical attention on the field.
Hayden did not immediately know what caused Pierce to go down.
“We’re just praying that he’ll be OK,” Hayden said.
The game, which does not count toward overall records, resumed after Pierce left the field. Watson Chapel begins its season next Thursday at Jordan Stadium against Jack Robey.
