The Pine Bluff Fillies used a 16-2 run to start the game and cruised down the stretch to a 69-47 win over the Little Rock McClellan Lady Lions at the Southeast Arkansas Girls Basketball Tournament held at Pine Bluff High.
Pine Bluff (1-0) started out well trailing 14-10 at the end of the first quarter. McClellan (0-1) tried to chip away at the lead in the second half but was unable to do so as Pine Bluff forced numerous turnovers with its tough defense.
Pine Bluff head coach Loy Moore was happy with the effort but said the Fillies still have some corrections to make despite the big victory.
“It was a sloppy game,” Moore said. “We turned it over a lot and missed a lot of easy shots.
“Maybe that is to be expected with the first game but we have more experience than that. We shouldn’t be doing those things but it’s a win.”
The Fillies pressed the whole first half to cause the Lady Lions to turn the ball over while running up the floor all night. Moore said the defense will be the biggest key for the season.
“Our offense came from our defense early on,” Moore said. “We didn’t play well after that. We couldn’t get into a rhythm but it’s something we will work on.”
Pine Bluff was led by Jasmyn Eckermann who finished the night with 10 points, three rebounds, one assist, and a steal.
Pine Bluff will take on Hamburg next in the tournament on Thursday.
