Seabrook nearly cost itself a championship opportunity Monday night — giving up the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning — but rebounded in the top of the eighth with two runs to defeat Pine Bluff Northern 4-2 in extra innings in the Babe Ruth 15-year-old state tournament at Taylor Field.
Working on a complete-game victory, Blake Phillips was one strike away from sealing the win, but an errant throw to third allowed the tying run to come in and score. Two pitches later, he struck out Blake Hence to end the inning but ended up with a no-decision.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Xavier Roberson singled and later stole second and third to move 90 feet away from tying the game for Northern.
Roberson was caught leaning a little too far from third but Phillips’ pick off attempt sailed — allowing Roberson to score and tie the game.
Seabrook responded with two runs in the top of the eighth inning — taking a 4-2 lead on a wild pitch that allowed Scott Taylor to score.
After Brandon Little pitched seven innings for Northern, Bernard Black started the top of the eighth but gave up three hits and a walk before being replaced by Jaylon DeShazier.
Seabrook’s Jaylen Williams led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. He later scored on an RBI single by Taylor. Ja’Kobi Jackson followed with a single and Phillips loaded the bases with a walk.
DeShazier came in and struck out the next batter and got the final out on a pop up to third to end the inning.
Black takes the loss for Northern after just one-third of an inning pitched. He allowed two runs (both earned) on three hits with a walk.
Little earned a no-decision after allowing two unearned runs on one hit with two walks and 10 strikeouts.
For Seabrook, Phillips allowed two runs (both earned) on three hits in seven innings. He struck out 10 and walked three.
Jackson earns the win after facing just four batters in the bottom of the eighth and allowing just the lead off walk.
Seabrook had a 2-0 lead after the fourth inning. But Northern got within one run in the bottom half thanks to an RBI single by Roberson. He finished 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Williams was 1 for 3 with a run scored and Taylor was 1 for 3 with a walk, a run and an RBI. Jackson had a single and Phillips reached three times — all walks.
White Hall 10, Lonoke 2
Layne Hartsfield tallied three hits and three RBIs as White Hall rolled over Lonoke 10-2 in the Babe Ruth 15-year-old state tournament on Monday night.
Caleb Carr earned the win after allowing just two runs in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out 14 batters, allowed just four hits and walked two.
Chase Bryan was 0 for 1 but scored four runs for White Hall and Dutton Day was 2 for 4.
