Prescott's gamble pays off


PRESCOTT — Prescott converted a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter to knock off Fordyce 22-21 Friday night.

Prescott scored on a 5-yard touchdown run to get within one point of Fordyce. The Curley Wolves opted to go for the two-point conversion and the gamble paid off to get the one-point win.

In the first quarter, Prescott would score first with 4:05 left, on a 5-yard touchdown run. The Redbugs answered back in the second quarter with a 5-yard touchdown run from Larry Buckley.

Gary Cross added to the Fordyce lead with a 49-yard touchdown reception. The Redbugs led 14-7 at halftime.

The only score in the third quarter came on a Fordyce fumble recovery in the end zone from Preston Blackmon.

Offensively for Fordyce, Larry Buckley had 7 catches for 69 yards, and 30 rushing yards with two touchdowns. The Redbugs will travel to Smackover next Friday.

Hamburg 21, Star City 12

HAMBURG — The Star City Bulldogs fell to Hamburg Friday night. The Bulldogs were scoreless in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Dajunn Harris scored on a 22-yard run. Darien Chaney would then score on a 5-yard pass from quarterback Tye Brown. The Bulldogs entered the locker room down 14-12 at the half.

In the third quarter, Hamburg extended their lead to 21-12.

Harris led Star City on the offensive side of the ball, with 18 carries for 115 yards.

The Bulldogs will host Dumas next Friday at 7p.m.

Newport 41, Stuttgart 21

NEWPORT — Newport completely dominated the defending 4A state champions as Stuttgart lost 41-21 Friday night.

Newport scored first with 11:15 left in the second quarter, but missed the extra point. They would score again at the 10-minute mark. The extra point was missed again.

Stuttgart scored their first touchdown with 6:25 left on a 8-yard run from Tyler Luster. With 0:52 left in the second quarter Newport would score on a 22-yard pass. The Ricebirds would enter the half down 20-7.

In the third quarter, Malik Brasfield had a 62-yard punt return to bring the Ricebirds within a touchdown. Newport answered with another touchdown on a 12-yard run. With 0:51 sec left in the quarter, Luster scored on a two-yard run.

The fourth quarter was all Newport. They would score on a 74-yard touchdown run, and on a 43-yard touchdown run. For the Ricebirds, Brasfield had 18 carries for 109 yards. Stuttgart will host Clinton next Friday. It is their Homecoming.

Benton 42, Sheridan 6

BENTON — The Benton Panthers cruised to an easy victory over the Sheridan Yellowjackets Friday night.

In the first quarter, quarterback Tarek Beaugard connected with John Davis on a 45-yard touchdown pass. Grant Hinze kicked the extra point. With 4:19 left, Beaugard would score on an 8-yard run. Hinze was there to complete the extra point attempt.

In the second quarter, Beaugard threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Colton Nix. On their next drive, Drew Dyer would score on a 25-yard run. The Bears went into the half with a 28-0 lead.

In the third quarter, Shaun Carey scored for Benton on a 3-yard touchdown run. Sheridan would get their first touchdown of the night when quarterback Brady Bibb connected with Cody Thompson on a 62-yard pass with 5:07 left in the quarter.

Benton’s Cason Maertens completed a 6-yard pass to Casey Green for the game’s only score in the fourth quarter. Joshua Gray completed the extra point attempt.
