Preps Roundup: Wildcats move in position to win Sheridan tourney


SHERIDAN — Watson Chapel will compete for the championship of the Sheridan Invitational baseball tournament with an 8-1 victory over Malvern Saturday.

Justin Pierce pitched six innings, allowed five hits and struck out six to pick up his first win of the season.

Landen Colson closed it out for the Wildcats (2-0), who will face Sheridan at 4 p.m. Monday in the round-robin tournament.

Blake Phillips and Josh Dardenne had a pair of RBIs each for the Wildcats.

Watson Chapel 9, Pangburn 1

SHERIDAN — Josh Dardenne pitched five innings and struck out five as Watson Chapel defeated Pangburn 9-1 in the first game of the Sheridan Invitational Saturday afternoon.

Dardenne allowed just six hits and Bernard Black threw two scoreless innings to close out the game.

Landen Colson and Jalen Jackson had a double and two RBIs each for the Wildcats (2-0).

Also in the Sheridan Invitational: Dollarway lost its two games. The Cardinals fell 16-1 to Malvern and 12-2 to Pangburn.

Dollarway will face Sheridan in the tournament at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Woodlawn 9, Heber Springs 2

WOODLAWN — Taylor Stitt allowed five hits and two runs on five innings and picked up the win in his first decision of the year for the 2A perennial power Bears (2-0).

Stitt also batted in a run on a single. Colton Williams also lined a two-run double, and J.P. Aiken and Steven Allbright added RBI singles for Woodlawn.

Trey Chapman struck out three and allowed no hits in the final two innings.

It was the season opener for the 4A Panthers.

Star City 12, Magnolia 11

NASHVILLE — Payne Patton hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break an 11-11 tie and give the Star City Bulldogs a one-run lead over the Magnolia Panthers.

Austin Powell pitched the top of the seventh inning and sat down Magnolia 1-2-3 as the Bulldogs finished in third place in the Nashville tournament on Saturday.

Powell is credited with the win after he went five innings, struck out four and allowed three walks with just two earned runs. He also finished 2 for 3 with a double and was named to the all-tournament team.

Max Ross finished 2 for 3 with a double. Blake Wynn, who picked up a win on Thursday, was also named to the all-tournament team.

Star City will open up 8-4A Conference play on Monday at Dumas, beginning at 5 p.m.

Warren takes home SEARK Invitational title

Pine Bluff finished in second place in the first-ever Southeast Arkansas Invitational soccer tournament on Saturday.

The Zebras defeated Monticello 3-0 and Lake Village 2-1, and lost to Warren 3-0 in the championship game.

Warren finished in first place, going undefeated. The Lumberjacks defeated Lake Village 3-0, Monticello 5-0 and Pine Bluff.

Warren’s Kevin Cortez and Oscar Pidilla was named to the all-tournament team. Lorenzo Williams and Marcus Halliburton were named to the team for Pine Bluff.

Lake Village finished in third and Monticello in fourth.

Monticello’s Dustin Davis and Sam Pelki were named to the all-tournament team as well.
