HOT SPRINGS — A sacrifice bunt and two-out RBI double in the eighth inning helped Watson Chapel win a first-place battle in the 5A-South Conference baseball race.
Blake Phillips’ bunt moved Landen Colson from first base to third, and Justin Pierce delivered the winning hit in a 7-6 victory over Hot Springs Lakeside. Now, Watson Chapel (17-5, 11-1 in 5A-South), which was coming off a thrilling come-from-behind home win against White Hall by the same score Friday, needs only to win one of its two remaining conference games.
Jaylen Jackson slammed the door on Lakeside by striking out the last batter on a full count. He worked the final 1 2/3 innings for the win.
But Lakeside (11-2 in 5A-South) started the drama with a three-run home run that evened the score at 6 in the bottom of the sixth. That was after the Wildcats scored five runs in the top of the inning.
The Rams scored three runs in the fourth to erase a 1-0 lead.
Pierce and Colson each had two hits, and Dalton Barker, Jacob Owen and Phillips recorded the other hits for the Wildcats. Starter Josh Dardenne allowed three earned runs and walked one while striking out four in the first 6 1/3 innings.
Watson Chapel will play at De Queen on Thursday and host Hot Springs next Tuesday for Senior Day.
