Preps Roundup: Wildcats advance to Goldfish Classic final


LONOKE — Watson Chapel enjoyed a big second half and came away with a 61-41 boys basketball victory against Stuttgart on Friday in the semifinal round of the Goldfish Classic.

Watson Chapel (8-2) led 12-11 through the first 8 minutes and 26-21 at halftime, but outscored Stuttgart (2-5) 35-20 in the second half.

Xavier Young and Ben Marcus each scored 14 points to lead Watson Chapel. Tevin Brown added 12 points and Leonard Robinson had 10.

Dewayne Minter had 10 points for the Ricebirds, who will play the Lonoke-England loser at 3:30 p.m. Saturday for third place.

Watson Chapel will take on the Lonoke-England winner at 7 p.m. Saturday for the championship.

Camden Fairview 49, Sheridan 48

CAMDEN — A four-point play with 4.6 seconds left cost the Yellowjackets (4-7) a victory in the Camden Fairview Holiday Classic.

Sheridan, which converted 8 of 17 free throws, missed a pair with 20 seconds left, leading 48-45. After Sheridan used a foul to give, Camden Fairview rebounded a missed three-point shot and was fouled on a made three, following up with the go-ahead free throw. Sheridan did not get off a shot before the final buzzer.

20 seconds left, Sheridan up 48-45, missed both free throws. Had a foul to give, shot a 3, missed, rebound, 3 good and 1.

For the Yellowjackets, Austen Theiss scored 10 points, Chris Whitman added nine and Dylan Morris had six. Sheridan went 17 for 26 from two-point range and 19 for 36 from the field.

Sheridan will take on the North Pulaski-El Dorado loser at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

El Dorado 65, Warren 56 (Thu.)

CAMDEN — The Wildcats went on a big fourth-quarter run to hand the Lumberjacks a loss in Warren’s season opener at the Camden Fairview Holiday Classic.

Lafoy Smith and Ryan Clary each scored 13 points and Darveon Brown had 12 for Warren. Smith and Brown were on the Lumberjack football team that finished as 4A runners-up six days earlier.

El Dorado, whose football team won the 6A championship on Dec. 14, outscored Warren 24-13 in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats led 28-22 at halftime.

Warren will play Magnolia or North Pulaski at 4 p.m. Saturday.

GIRLS

Pine Bluff 60, Hughes 27

WYNNE — The Fillies easily improved to 9-1 Friday in the Mid-South Classic.

Pine Bluff was in control throughout the game, leading 27-17 at halftime. Ajia Richardson led the Fillies with 10 points and Chasity Moore added nine.

Pine Bluff will play Little Rock Parkview at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Watson Chapel 51, Prescott 43

CAMDEN — Freshman Peyton Martin grabbed 14 rebounds to go with a team-high 16 points, and the Lady Wildcats (4-6) opened their run in the Camden Fairview Holiday Classic with an eight-point win over the Curley Wolves.

Kierra Cox and Morgan Monk each scored 13 for Watson Chapel. Cox also had four assists and five steals and Monk added nine rebounds.

Watson Chapel will play El Dorado at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Sheridan 56, Camden Fairview 37

CAMDEN — The Lady Jackets await the Watson Chapel vs. El Dorado winner for Monday’s title game at 7 p.m.

Hannah Schultz had 16 points and Ashton Hill scored 15 for Sheridan, which held Camden Fairview to two second-quarter points and led 21-11 at halftime.

Star City 58, Greene County Tech 47

HEBER SPRINGS — The Lady Bulldogs (11-2) advanced to the championship game of the Heber Springs Christmas Classic with an 11-point victory over the Lady Eagles.

Jaida Harden led Star City with 12 points. Tekeila Walker had 10 and Larena Walker added nine.

Star City outscored GCT 16-8 in the second quarter to take a 30-18 halftime lead.

The Lady Bulldogs will face Heber Springs at 6:30 p.m. Saturday for the championship.

Warren 48, Magnolia 44

CAMDEN — Shamiqua Pickett scored nearly half of the Lady Jacks’ points as they bounced back to beat the Lady Panthers in the consolation round of the Camden Fairview Holiday Classic.

Pickett had 23 points and Morgan Gathen added 13 for the Lady Jacks (4-4), who will play Prescott or Stephens at 1 p.m. Monday in the consolation final.

Warren was sent to the consolation bracket after losing 58-44 to Camden Fairview on Thursday.

Stuttgart 53, Hazen 35

LONOKE — Tiffany Gipson had 25 points to lead the Lady Ricebirds (6-4) past the Lady Hornets in a consolation-round game of the Goldfish Classic.

Shacara Humbert added 11 points for Stuttgart, which will play Bald Knob at 11 a.m Saturday.

Stuttgart moved into the consolation bracket after a 57-43 loss to England on Thursday.
