CAMDEN — Shamiqua Pickett has done it again.
Warren’s standout sophomore forward has scored her second 40-point game of the season in leading the Lady Jacks to a 79-70 win over Stephens in the fifth-place game of the Camden Fairview Holiday Classic on Monday. Pickett finished with 43 points, topping her previous career high of 42 against Camden Harmony Grove exactly one month earlier.
Warren coach Sandra Hatley credited Pickett’s performance to point guard Morgan Gathen’s ability to work the ball to her and Pickett’s putbacks. Gathen scored 13 points and was Warren’s only other double-digit scorer.
The Lady Jacks (5-4) scored 23 or more points in every period except the second, when Stephens outscored them 18-6 to take a 33-29 halftime lead. Warren responded with a 26-13 third quarter and protected the cushion for the win.
“They went from a half-court defense to a full-court defense, and we didn’t handle it,” Hatley said of the second quarter. “We changed from a 2-3 to a 3-2 to limit their three-point shooters, and we wore them down with man (to man) defense.”
The Lady Jacks will host Star City on Jan. 7.
