Preps Roundup: Panthers stop Z’s, hold onto first-place tie


BENTON — Benton remained atop the 7A/6A-South Conference boys basketball standings after beating Pine Bluff 62-49 on Friday.

Roosevelt Murray scored 18 points and Marcus Thomas had 10 for Pine Bluff (9-8, 4-3 in 7A/6A-South).

Benton (15-5, 6-1) is still tied with Bryant (10-8, 6-1) for first place in the conference. Bryant defeated El Dorado 60-59 on Friday.

Smackover 64, Drew Central 61

SMACKOVER — Three players in double-figures weren’t enough to help the Pirates earn their first conference win of the season Friday night.

Mahli Arrington led Drew Central (9-12, 0-5 in 8-3A), while Edmund Hunter and Tremaine Newton added 13 points apiece.

El Dorado West Side 57, Ridway Christian 29

The Eagles were held to just two points in the first quarter, and scored no more than 10 in any quarter in Friday’s senior night game.

El Dorado West Side held quarter leads of 16-2, 28-12 and 42-20.

Jacob Dedman scored 10 points to lead Ridgway (6-9, 4-5 in Arkansas Association of Christian Schools South Division).

Ridgway will conclude its regular season with a makeup game Monday night against Hope-based Garrett Memorial.

GIRLS

Drew Central 75, Smackover 44

SMACKOVER — Cierra Gardner came up with a triple-double as she led Drew Central (11-8, 3-2 in 8-3A) to a blowout win over Smackover (0-5 in 8-3A).

Gardner had 10 steals and 12 assists to go with her 24 points. Allison Eubanks added 12 points for the winning Lady Pirates.

Dumas 40, DeWitt 28

DeWITT — Mona Mitchell’s 15 points helped the Lady Cats overcome an 11-9 first-quarter deficit.

Dumas (14-8, 6-3 in 8-4A) led 22-15 at halftime and 31-22 heading into the fourth.

Tia White added 10 points for Dumas, which hosts Star City on Tuesday.
