Pirates dodge thanks to missed Lions’ FTs

MONTICELLO — Drew Central hung on to edge Little Rock McClellan 56-54 Friday and advance to the semifinals of the Commercial Bank SEARK Holiday Tournament.

Drew Central led 27-14 at halftime, but Hamburg knocked down eight three-pointers in the second half.

The Pirates led 56-53 when they fouled a Lions player shooting a three with 6.9 seconds remaining. The Hamburg player made just one free throw, though, and Drew Central hung on to advance.

The Pirates were led by Mahli Arrington with 17 points, Edmond Hunter with 12 and Tremaine Newton with 10.

Drew Central will play Jacksonville at 5:20 p.m. Saturday, while Hamburg will face Rison in the consolation final at 2:25 p.m. on Monday.


Monticello 64, Rison 32

MONTICELLO — The Lady Billies doubled-up the Lady Wildcats to reach the semifinals.

Monticello led 17-10 after the first quarter, 32-16 at halftime, and 54-26 heading into the fourth.

Sedre’auna Griddine led the way for the Lady Billies scoring 23 points. Shatia Johnson and Deja Stanley added 10 points each.

Kaklyn Mason’s 15 points led Rison, which will play Hamburg on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Monticello will face Little Rock McClellan at 6:40 p.m. Saturday for a spot in Monday’s championship game.

McGehee 60, Dumas 56 (2OT)

MONTICELLO — It took two extra periods but the Lady Owls finally put away the Lady Bobcats.

Dumas outscored McGehee 21-9 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Both teams scored six points in the first extra session before the Lady Owls outscored the Lady Bobcats 6-2 in the second overtime period.

Whitney Henderson led Dumas with 15 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, and Mona Mitchell added 13.

Dumas will face the winner of Saturday’s Rison-Hamburg game in Monday’s consolation final at 1 p.m. McGehee advances to play Dollarway, which advanced due to a forfeit by Drew Central, at 4 p.m. Saturday.
