Murray’s 28 helps Pine Bluff to Dumas Classic title


DUMAS — Roosevelt Murray scored more than half of Pine Bluff’s points Friday night as the Zebras beat Dumas 53-45 to win the Dumas Classic in boys basketball.

Murray had 28 points to lead all scorers and help Pine Bluff even its record at 3-3. For Dumas (1-5), Ken Madden led the way with 13 points, followed by Johnny Gibson with 11 and James Spinks with 10.

Pine Bluff and Dumas will compete in the Zebra Christmas Invitational at Pine Bluff High, starting next Friday.

In the third-place game of the Dumas Classic on Friday, Earle beat Hughes 56-46.

Harding Academy 53, Drew Central 51

LITTLE ROCK — The Pirates nearly forced overtime against the defending 3A state basketball champion Wildcats, but left the Arkansas Baptist classic with a two-point defeat.

Drew Central made a steal with 2 seconds left and rushed a layup just before the buzzer, but the shot rolled off the rim.

Tremaine Newton scored 13 points to lead Drew Central, which will play Central Arkansas Christian at 5:15 p.m. today at Arkansas Baptist.

GIRLS

Pine Bluff 54, Dumas 43

DUMAS — Pine Bluff led wire-to-wire and won the girls championship of the Dumas Classic with an 11-point victory over Dumas on Friday.

For Pine Bluff (8-1), Jasmyn Eckermann led all scorers with 19 points and Ajia Richardson had 12. Pine Bluff held a double-digit advantage for much of the game, leading 16-6 after one quarter, 35-16 at halftime and 44-28 after three periods.

Whitney Henderson led Dumas with 12 points. Tia White added 11 and Mona Mitchell had seven.

Watson Chapel 56, Sylvan Hills 43

SHERWOOD — The Lady Wildcats (3-6) broke open an eight-point halftime lead and marched to a nonconference victory against the Lady Bears.

Kierra Cox had 24 points and Peyton Martin added 17 for Watson Chapel, which led 29-21 at the break and opened up a 49-31 led through three quarters.

Watson Chapel will play Prescott next Friday in the Camden Fairview tournament.

Earle 56, McGehee 46

DUMAS — Shakyla Begnaud paced the Lady Owls with 23 points in a losing effort Friday.

The game was for third place in the Dumas Classic.

Harding Academy 57, Drew Central 26

LITTLE ROCK — The Lady Wildcats pulled away from a 26-20 halftime lead and held the Lady Pirates to six second-half points en route to a big victory in the Arkansas Baptist classic.

No further statistics were available. Drew Central will play Central Arkansas Christian at 4 p.m. today at Arkansas Baptist.

JUNIOR HIGH BOYS

Jack Robey 31, Helena-West Helena 29

HELENA-WEST HELELNA — Kendrick Thorn hit a floater with eight seconds left to cap a big rally by Jack Robey.

Thorn’s jumper was the finishing touch on a comeback that started with Robey down 10 with about four minutes left to play.

Zamarco Haynes and Corbenon Ganther led Robey (8-1) with eight points each.

Jack Robey 53, Helena-West Helena 27 (eighth grade)

HELENA-WEST HELELNA — Kadarius Baggett led four Jack Robey players who scored at least eight points in the road win.

Baggett scored 12 points, while Jayrimee Thompson added nine.

Kendrick Thorn and Antonio Snow both finished with eigth points for Robey (4-0).
