Murphy, PB boys 4x400 place second at Meet of Champions

HEBER SPRINGS — Dollarway’s Henri Murphy placed second in the boys 100-meter dash and the Pine Bluff boys 4x400 team finished runner-up to highlight area athletes in the Meet of Champions on Saturday.

Murphy finished with a time of 10.88 seconds in the 100, losing by .06 to Kevondre Jones of Camden Fairview. Pine Bluff’s Jayshon Williams finished fifth with a time of 10.99. Murphy finished sixth in the 200 with a 22.65-second sprint. North Little Rock’s Anthony Londen won in a time of 22.11 seconds.

Also for Dollarway, Kabion Ento tied for fifth in the boys high jump at 6 feet, 2 inches. Demetrious Taylor of Texarkana cleared the 6-foot, 4-inch mark to win the event.

The Zebra 4x400 team (3:21.14) finished behind only Bryant (3:19.40) in the final race of the competition.

Pine Bluff’s Lawrence Nelson placed in two events on Saturday. He ended up sixth in the boys triple jump at 42 feet, 11 inches. Brundon Workman of Rogers took top honors with a 45-foot, 1 1/2-inch leap. Nelson finished 11th in the boys long jump at 20 feet, 2 inches.

Also for the Zebras, Kyran Simmons placed third in the boys 400. His time of 50.3o seconds was bested only by a pair from Bryant — John Wicks with 49.91 and Steven Murdock with 50.22. White Hall’s Kaseem Smith finished fifth in the race, posting a 51.14-second split.

Smith’s finish was tied for the best of the day by a White Hall athlete. Bradie Ryburn tied for fifth in the girls high jump, clearing 4 feet, 10 inches. Kelsey Herman of Crossett won the event with a 5-foot, 7-inch leap. White Hall’s Rickei Jackson placed sixth in the girls 400 finishing just north of the one-minute mark at 1:00.64. Springdale Har-Ber’s Amanda Dillon took first in the race with a time of 56.27.

Other local athletes

Monticello’s Sarah Claycomb finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the girls 3,200 and 1,600 races on Saturday. In the 3,200, Claycomb lost out to Cabot’s Micah Huckabee (11:32.24) and in the 1,600 to Mount Saint Mary’s Alex Ritchey (5:16.66). Sheridan’s Kaylee Stewart finished seventh in the girls 1,600.

The Lady Yellowjackets’ Chandler Kelly placed third in the girls 100 hurdles with a 15.54-second showing. Payton Stumbaugh of Har-Ber won with a time of 14.04. Sheridan’s Sarah Michael finished in a seventh-place tie in the girls pole vault. Michael cleared 10 feet, 6 inches. Cabot’s Lexi Weeks attempted a national record vault of 14 feet, 3 3/4 inches, but had to settle for a state-record 14-foot vault.

Andious Wynne of McGehee earned a fifth-place finish in the girls triple jump with a long of 17-feet, 5 1/2 inches. Crossett’s Herman won with a jump of 19 feet, 2 3/4-inches.

Drew Central’s Layne Brotherton placed 12th in the boys 800 with a 2:06.55-second clip. Little Rock Catholic’s Kieran Taylor won with a time of 1:57.03.
