Local schools to bid for tournaments

Dumas High School could be the site of this year’s 4A state boys and girls basketball tournaments.

The school is the only one in Southeast Arkansas bidding for state basketball hosting rights. The Arkansas Activities Association Board of Directors will assign sites for each of its regional and state sports tournament events for 2014 at 4 p.m. Thursday at the AAA’s North Little Rock office.

Dumas most recently hosted the 2012 4A South Region basketball tournaments and also is bidding for that tournament as well. Monticello and Nashville are in contention for that event, to be held Feb. 26-March 1.

Heber Springs, Lincoln, Lonoke, Maumelle, Ozark and Valley View are bidding against Dumas for the 4A state tournaments, scheduled for March 4-8. North Little Rock (7A) and Alma (5A) are uncontested in their bids for their respective classes.

The 3A Region 4 hosting rights come down to Drew Central and Centerpoint.

Star City will host the 4A South Region baseball tournament, scheduled for May 9-12. No school has bid on the 3A Region 4 baseball tourney, which Fordyce won last year en route to a state runner-up finish, and Woodlawn and Parkers Chapel are lobbying for the 2A South Regional in baseball and softball.

Woodlawn is a candidate for the 2A state baseball tourney (May 15-17), along with Parkers Chapel and Marked Tree.

Monticello is vying for the 4A softball tournament, also May 15-17, as well as Mena, Nashville, Ashdown and Heber Springs.
