DC’s Brotherton strikes gold

The town of Monticello is celebrating another distance-event championship.

Layne Brotherton of Drew Central won the 800 meters Tuesday in the 3A state meet at Morrilton. The senior finished with a season-best time of 2 minutes, 3.07 seconds, exactly 1 second ahead of runner-up Michael Harris of Elkins.

Brotherton shaved off more than 5 seconds off his previous season best, which came in the Crossett Relays, according to varvee.com.

Brotherton’s victory came the same day that Sarah Claycomb of Monticello High won her second straight 3,200-meter championship in the 4A meet in Heber Springs.
