Cardinals back in title game

CLINTON — Dollarway 3, Lonoke 0.

That’s actually the series count between the two 2-4A Conference rivals after Dollarway posted a 65-49 victory Friday night in the semifinals of the 4A East Region Tournament. But more importantly, it puts the Cardinals (18-3) in their second straight regional title game and denies the Jackrabbits a shot at a No. 1 seed for next week’s 4A state tournament on their home floor.

Dollarway will take on Brookland, a 50-31 winner over Stuttgart, at 7:30 tonight.

It was close for a half as Dollarway clung to a 30-29 lead, but the Cardinals increased the lead to 51-42 through three quarters and kept up the pace to win.

Darieus Robinson had a game-high 17 points, Gujuan Christmas scored 14 and Joshua Liddell added 12 for the Cardinals, who converted 22 of 49 field goals and 20 of 33 free throws.

Lonoke outrebounded Dollarway 33-27, but turned the ball over 14 times to Dollarway’s nine.

Jamel Rankin led the Jackrabbits with 13 points. He was followed by Darrian Young with 11, Darius McCall with 10 and Blake Mack with seven.

Dollarway, which reached the 4A state title game last year, is the defending regional champion.

Brookland 50, Stuttgart 31

CLINTON — Stuttgart’s first regional semifinal in three years didn’t go all that smoothly.

Brookland held the Ricebirds to two second-quarter points and had a 27-10 halftime lead, en route to a 19-point win.

Alante Stewart led the Ricebirds (14-14) with 12 points.

Stuttgart will take on Lonoke for third place at 1:30 p.m. today.

4A South Region

Monticello 47, Nashville 42

NASHVILLE — The 4A South Region Tournament for Monticello has not been quite the breeze the Billies experienced going undefeated in 8-4A Conference play for the second straight year.

The Billies, who beat Arkadelphia 63-62 on Wednesday, overcame a bad shooting night and outscored the Scrappers 20-12 in the final 8 minutes to earn a second straight regional final appearance. D.J. Franklin led Monticello (23-3) with 11 points.

Monticello was winning a defensive battle through the first 8 minutes with a 6-2 lead, but Nashville picked up the offense and took a 17-14 lead into halftime.

Monticello will take on Central Arkansas Christian, which defeated the Billies in last year’s regional final.

GIRLS

4A South Region

CAC 48, Star City 37

NASHVILLE — Central Arkansas Christian ended any hopes of a Star City-Malvern rematch — and the Lady Dogs’ 21-game winning streak.

The Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Dogs 15-7 to put the game away and set up an all-7-4A Conference regional final with the Lady Leopards. Malvern, the defending state champion, beat Star City in last year’s regional final and state semifinal.

CAC center Sydnie Jones gave Star City a hard time in the paint. She finished with 20 points, four blocks and six rebounds.

Jaida Harden led Star City (25-3) 10 points, six rebounds and four assists. Jade Brasher had nine points, making 3 of 5 three-point attempts, and Amira Ford grabbed five of her six rebounds on offense.

Star City will take on Nashville at noon today for third place.

7A/6A-South

El Dorado 48, Sheridan 31

EL DORADO — El Dorado put a purple championship bow around its regular season Friday as the Lady Wildcats drubbed Sheridan 48-31 to claim sole possession of the 7A/6A-South crown. Athletic director Phillip Lansdell presented the girls with the championship trophy immediately after the contest.

The Lady Wildcats improved to 25-3 and finished off a 12-2 run through the league. El Dorado takes the No. 1 seed into next week’s 6A state tournament.

On Friday, El Dorado took advantage of Taylor McCool inside. The 6-3 senior punished the Lady Jackets (13-10, 8-6) for 23 points and 11 rebounds. Defensively, junior Chardessia George held Sheridan’s Kadeisha Cooper to just seven points, including just two in the second half, none in the fourth quarter.

Hannah Schultz led Sheridan with nine.
