McGEHEE — The McGehee Lady Owls received a 35-point performance from Shakyla Begnaud to get past the Fordyce Lady Bugs in a 55-48 victory Thursday night. The win moved McGehee into a tie with Fordyce for first place in the 8-3A Conference.
McGehee (9-7, 4-1 in 8-3A) and Fordyce (17-7, 4-1) battled back and forth throughout the night in which no team had a lead bigger than nine points the whole game. However, Fordyce had no answer for Begnaud, who was unstoppable in the paint.
The Lady Owls jumped ahead to a quick 4-1 lead with help from an and-one conversion from Begnaud. After a three-pointer from Fordyce forward Lacie Hulse tied the game at 4-4, the Lady Owls hit a free throw and never fell behind again.
McGehee went on to hold a 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 23-17 at half. Begnaud scored 14 of her 35 points in the first half.
In the second half, McGehee and Begnaud matched Fordyce point for point as both teams traded buckets. The Lady Owls led 38-32 at the end of the third as Fordyce tried to cut into the lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bugs reached within five points with 6:05 left in the game, but Begnaud sparked a 6-2 run and the Lady Owls hit free throws down the stretch to close the door on the Lady Redbugs.
Along with her 35 points, Begnaud added six rebounds and four steals.
Hulse led Fordyce with 16 points and Tyneisha Brazil added 10.
