Stoney signs agreement with Hogs

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas will begin preparation for the 2014 season when preseason practices begin Monday afternoon.

But Arkansas coach Bret Bielema officially welcomed a highly rated member of the 2015 recruiting class to the Razorbacks on Saturday night.

Charleston quarterback Ty Storey signed a financial aid agreement with Arkansas on Saturday evening and will enroll in January. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Storey took advantage of an NCAA rule that permits players on track to graduate high school early to sign a financial aid agreement with a university as early as Aug. 1.

“I am pleased to announce that Ty will be joining the Razorbacks after he finishes his prolific high school career,” Bielema said in a news release. “As one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, he starts our signing class in a strong way and he realizes the significance of student-athletes from our state playing for Arkansas.

“Ty is a blue-collar player who grew up with a strong work ethic instilled in him by his family. His attitude and approach to the game fit perfectly with the philosophies we operate with as a program.”

Storey was named Arkansas’ Gatorade Player of the Year after throwing for 4,241 yards with 52 touchdowns last season. He led Charleston to the 3A state championship and has thrown for 8,701 yards and 101 touchdowns in his career.

Rivals.com and Scout.com rate Storey as a four-star prospect on a five-star scale. He also is rated as the fifth-best pro-style quarterback in the 2015 class by Rivals.com and seventh by 247Sports.com.

Storey chose Arkansas over Alabama, Auburn and other scholarship offers, according to a news release. He made a verbal commitment last summer.

A financial aid agreement binds a school to a prospect. But it does not bind a prospect to the school. The agreement will allow Storey to have more contact with Arkansas’ coaches before he reports to campus in January.

“It just feels good to go ahead and put the ink to the paper,” Storey told Hawgs Illustrated on Saturday. “I’ve been committed forever it seems like and finally get to kind of make this official and it feels really good.”
