NORTH LITTLE ROCK — The Arkansas baseball team won its fifth straight game and earned its third shutout in the last four games with a 3-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Wednesday at Dickey-Stephens Park.
Freshman Alex Phillips picked up his second win of the season with a career-long six innings pitched. Phillips registered a career-high seven strikeouts while scattering three hits and keeping the Delta Devils scoreless.
Juniors Jackson Lowery and Michael Gunn finished off the shutout as Lowery threw two innings — striking out three — and Gunn picking up the save with a perfect ninth that included two strikeouts.
Arkansas (16-8) scored a run in the bottom of the third and two runs in the bottom of the seventh. MVSU (1-23) left five runners on base and had three errors in the game.
Jonathan Parker is tagged with the loss for MVSU. He lasted five innings, allowing one run (earned) on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Ryan Goddard pitched just one inning but gave up two runs (one earned) on one hit with a walk. Trent Kinney pitched the final two innings and allowed just one hit with a strikeout.
Bobby Wernes led the way offensively for the Razorbacks as he finished 2 for 3 with a run scored. Andrew Benintendi was 2 for 3 while Joe Serrano and Eric Fisher tallied a hit each.
For MVSU, Terrance Steele finished 2 for 3. Xzavier Franklin and Tyji Hawkins had the other two hits for the Delta Devils.
