The 23nd Annual Red Ribbon Walk/Run is set for Oct. 13 and proceeds from the event will support scholarships for graduating high school seniors. Sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Correction, the 5K race traditionally kicks off Jefferson County’s Red Ribbon Week, an anti-drug campaign aimed at young people.
The success of the event has allowed the amount of the scholarship to be raised to $750, said ADC Director Ray Hobbs. “In the earlier years, we were able to fund one or two scholarships but increased participation has allowed us to award five scholarships a year,” Hobbs said.
The 2012 scholarship winners were Robin Campbell, graduate of Pine Bluff High School; Katlyn Rook and Lauren Burgess, both graduates of White Hall High School; Hayley Webb, graduate of Newport High School, and Shannon Caldwell, graduate of Clarendon High School.
The entry fee for the Red Ribbon Run is $20 on the day of the race, but runners and walkers may pre-register for the event for $15. Pre-registration is now open and will continue through Monday, Oct. 8, and participants who sign up early are guaranteed to receive an official Red Ribbon T-shirt designed for this year’s race.
The Walk/Run will begin and end near the Wellness Center at Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. A pistol shot start will be at 8 a.m., so racers are encouraged to arrive early. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers in 12 age divisions.
“Since this race is all about benefitting our community, we really hope everyone in Jefferson County will be there on race day,” Hobbs said. “It doesn’t matter whether you run, walk, or hop through the race. It’s all about showing people that we care and that we support their efforts to be drug-free.”
Hobbs also said free refreshments will be served before and during the race and there will be a drawing for door prizes. Music will be provided by the Cummins Prison Band.
