Wabbaseka Memorial Committee to raise funds for to honor state flag maker, USS Arkansas

It all started in the small Jefferson County community of Wabbaseka with a simple, bold flag design. Willie Kavanaugh Hocker entered and won a contest to design a flag to fly atop the USS Arkansas. Today, that design represents all Arkansans. A fundraising campaign is now underway to erect a monument in honor of the Arkansas flag; its maker, Willie Kavanaugh Hocker; and the USS Arkansas to be located in the Wabbaseka city park. The memorial will be dedicated on Oct. 12.

The Wabbaseka Memorial Committee, comprised of current and former Wabbaseka citizens, are in the process of raising funds for the monument. Though a small marker currently exists, the committee believes the monument will draw attention to such an important part of Arkansas’s history.

The committee is seeking both monetary donations or in kind donations of materials or services. Financial contributions made to the Wabbaseka Memorial Fund can be deposited at any Simmons First National Bank location or mailed to the Wabbaseka Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 11, Wabbaseka, Arkansas 72175.
